1. I was born in South Africa on 3 January 1892
2. After the death of my father, Arthur, in 1896 I returned to England with my mother, Mabel, and brother
3. During my years at school I was a linguist, having mastered Greek and Latin along with Gothic and Finnish. I also made up my own languages
4. I met my future wife, Edith, at the bording house where I lived. I was 16, she was 19. We separated until I was 21 and finally got married in March 1916
5. At the start of WW1 I delayed my enlistment until I finished my degree at Oxford. After I enlisted with the Lancashire Fusiliers and ended with the rank of lieutenant despite of suffering from recurring bouts of trench fever

6. After the war I worked on the New English Dictionary. Also at this time had my first public reading of my own works at Exeter College which was well received
7. I had 3 sons and a daughter between 1917 and 1929
8. In 1925 I took up a professorship at Oxford University
9. In 1937 a tale about a hobbit, a creature that lived in a hole was published.
10. My most famous work, the Lord of the Rings, took 16 years to complete.
